living in the area > hale barns

Hale Barns is one of the most affluent villages in the South Manchester area. The area definitely is worthy of the description "leafy" with many of its tree lined roads looking out onto open countryside.

The centre of the village has excellent restaurants, including Corbans, a very popular contemporary venue with its own outside drinks area where the well heeled sit and relax, watching the world pass by.

Many of the mansion houses date back to the late 1800's when a small number of very wealthy and often eccentric millionaires created their "lordly manor houses" for their retirement.

Today, these are intertwined with some of the most prestigious homes in the North West.

Hale Barns is also a very popular residential location for those with families. The roads of High Elm Road , Chapel Lane and those immediately branching off provide excellent value for money.

Hale Barns History

The fanning-out population from the station at Hale promoted the development of the older, rather more remote centre of Hale Barns. One of the oldest buildings in Hale Barns is the Hale Chapel (Unitarian) on Chapel Lane dating back to 1723. Conversely, one of the area's most recent purpose built churches, Holy Angels Catholic Church, was built in 1967 at the junction of Wicker Lane and Hale Road.

Sir Willian Cunliffe Brooks, the son of a Manchester Banker had a large estate covering the rural Hale Barns. After his death, his estate was split up and a number of wealthy families owned and consequently sold off areas for development.

As more and more land was sold so more would-be squires were attracted to the area building many of the fine mansion houses we see today.

The 1950's and 1960's saw the building of new housing developments expanding to the edge of the Bollin Valley , which provides excellent countryside for dog walkers as well as the urban rambler.

Today, many of the post war properties present an excellent opportunity for re-modelling, and in some cases homes with large plots have been demolished and replaced with prestige residences.

If you want to live the lifestyle of the city but want to relax and be close to the countryside, this is the place.
